What Programmatic Media Is

According to Oxford Dictionary, Marketing is the action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising.

According to Economic Times, advertising is a means of communication with the consumer of a product or service. It is from the Latin verb advertere, meaning “to turn one’s attention to (something).

Marketing is what brands do to talk to their perfect customer. Advertising is a marketing method used to talk to those customers.

Many advertising methods are used and categorized under Traditional Advertising (Cable TV, Print, Radio…) and Digital (social, search, display, native, streaming audio and video, etc)

Thus, Programmatic advertising is a form of digital advertising that automates how we talk to a brand’s perfect customer via digital channels.

Specifically, Programmatic advertising automates the marketplace buying and selling of advertising space.


According to dictionary.com, Programmatic is an adjective. It refers to tasks that can be done automated (using programs), especially as opposed to tasks that have to be done manually (by a person).

Let us illustrate this with the following example:

When buying or trading stocks, we use technology to access stock information, pricing, and the company’s details and history.

We can use fidelity, Ellevest, or a Tradestation to buy stock from Apple, Hertz, and Pubmatic.
